Question by Jordin K:

Mother’s Day Gift Ideas (read below)?

Mother’s day is not till next month, but time flies by so quickly, and I would really want to get an early start because my mother is extremely hard to shop for. I would like to give something PRACTICAL to her….the keyword is practical….something she can use.

Please exclude the following: candles, perfume, lotion, blankets, mattresses, poems, songs, photos, collages, spa day or going out, shoes, clothes, jewelry, hair stuff, garden decor, window stuff, anything that has to do with the house or decorations, blenders, kitchen stuff, entertainment (cds and dvds), food, purses, watches, gift certificates or gift cards, money, electronics, blowdryer, sunglasses, gift baskets, keychains, anything to do with car kits because she does not have a car and I can’t afford to buy her one and plus she does not know how to drive and no I do not want to buy a lesson to learn how to drive, picture frames, sewing kits, baskts, anything home-made, etc.

Told you it was hard!

I want to start an herb garden indoors but will ...

      Question by :

I want to start an herb garden indoors but will need to use artificial light. What is the best type of light?

I have read that a regular fluorescent light works fine, but I have also heard of ones made specifically for growing (such as GE Sunshine 40W) and want to know if those are any better. Also, are there any other details you can give me on how to be successful? Are there any types of herbs that work better or any that are worse?

      I am interested in planting:
      Mint
      Chives
      Basil
      Oregano
      Parsley
      Rosemary
      any other thoughts??

      Thanks!!

Unless you’re growing them at an industrial scale why would you want artificial light? Moonlight will do from a window sill.

I am planning to grow some herbs (basil) in a ceramic container. There is a note in the container which says “This Product contains no lead. Not for food use. Use Pad for Indoors”. Do you think it is safe to grow herbs in it?

No. I wouldn’t grow it in something that doesn’t suggest you put food in it, but it may mean that not to store food in it…like on the counter? I say to try to find a container that it biodegradable, you can get them at any natural food stores, jo-ann fabric, etc.
